WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - According to preliminary crime statistics for 2008, serious crime has decreased in Wilmington for the sixth striaght year.

Cases of rape, theft, assault, and arson all dropped in 2008.  Arson saw the biggest decrease with 28% fewer cases reported.

The statistics show murder is the only major crime showing an increase in 2008.  The data includes the skeletal remains found in April 2008

Although the two deaths occurred in previous years, authorities say offenses must be documented in the year in which the crimes were reported.
