NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Icy roads in Wilmington caused a traffic accident early Wednesday morning.

According to Pender and New Hanover County authorities, and Isuzu Rodeo and a tractor trailer collided on the bridge of the east bound lane of I-40, just before the Castle Hayne exit.

The Isuzu hit a patch of ice, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.  That's when a tractor trailer rig hit the SUV, causing the Rodeo to overturn.

The driver of the Isuzu and a passenger were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor trailers is okay.

Authorities warn motorists to take extra caution during bad weather.

"During cold weather when it's foggy, reduce your speed - especially during inclement weather," said Lt. Snyder with the New Hanover County Fire Department.  "In fact, we had rain last night and the cold temperatures probably contributed to the ice."

Authorities sent a salt truck to the bridge after the accident.  They say crews will keep an eye on the condiditon of the bridge to determine if more salt is needed.
