COLUMBUS COUNTY (WECT) - Tuesday night the Whiteville City Council voted 4-3 to dismiss Town Manager Josh Ray.

Ray's termination was not on the original agenda, and some city council members were upset that the public was not allowed to speak before they voted.

Council took a five minute recess to review their votes and look up whether or not public comments needed to take place before they voted on the issue.

After the recess, the public voiced their opinions for more than an hour about the positive things Ray had done in the community.  They said he was a mentor and role model for children in the area.

Ray himself addressed the audience and asked them to keep moving forward.

"Tonight I will ask you to keep doing what you're doing, and let's make Whiteville the best city we can," said Ray.

Some of the people at the meeting say they're going to circulate a petition to try to reinstate him as town manager.
