WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington Police are searching for the driver who hit a bicyclist Tuesday evening.

According to police, a man was struck by a vehicle near the McDonald's on Market Street and Princess Place.

Witnesses say they saw a blue Camry with 30 day tags hit a man on his bike and then flee the scene.

Authorities believe the bicyclists was leaving the McDonald's parking lot and was in the turn lane on Market Street when he was hit.

The bike was totaled and the man was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

"Normally the people will stop but there's a reason that the vehicle didn't stop," said Wilmington Police Officer Mark Anderson.  "When they were drunk, whether they didn't have a driver's license, it was suspended. For some reason the vehicle left. I doubt that the driver didn't know that he had hit the pedestrian on the bicycle."

Police officers urge drivers to be cautious of bikes and pedestrians, especially at night.  They also recommend cyclists wear reflective vests and have lights on their bikes.
