WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of orange barrels along Dawson Street are becoming an eye sore for some drivers during their daily commute.
The barrels were put up in October 2008 on Dawson Street extension between Oleander Drive and Wrightsville Avenue.
Business owners in the Wrightsville Office Plaza said they haven't seen construction progress since the addition of a traffic island, but the barrels are still in place.
Joe Chance, DOT deputy of division of trafficking, said the DOT is waiting for Progress Energy to move a communication pole so they can widen the street, which was not part of the initial construction plan.
"The dot decided to keep the barrels up because we needed a wider radius for trucks to turn. If we take the barrels away they could hit the power pole and don't want to do that," said Chance.
According to Chance, it could take up to a month before Progress Energy removes the communication pole.
