BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Bladen County teenager fell victim of a shooting Monday night.
Elizabethtown Police say 19-year-old Jahkee Sledge was shot and killed around 10:30 PM at the McDonald's Restaurant at South Poplar and Mill Streets.
Elizabethtown Police and the SBI searched the restaurant for clues, trying to determine why the young man was killed.
According to Police, a group of people went to the McDonald's after the East Bladen vs. West Bladen basketball game.
"Officers were only a block away and head the gunfire and finally when they got there they found the victim lying in the parking lot," said Elizabethtown Police Chief Robert Kinlaw.
Sledge was shot and died later at the hospital. He would have graduated from West Bladen High School later this month.
The young man's criminal record suggests he was a troubled teenager.
Officers say violence has become an issue in Elizabethtown, and they're trying to keep it under control.
"A lot of the issues we have are with people who come in from outside the city who don't actually live in town, but this is like a local gathering place," said Chief Kinlaw.
Some residents are concerned about the violence in the area.
"I'm very concerned," said a woman who wished to remain anonymous. "I'm not just concerned for my kids I'm concerned for everybody else's kids. Something needs to be done."
Police say they are trying several strategies to make sure the next gathering at McDonald's is peaceful.
