WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -- High unemployment rates are turning into record-setting enrollment numbers for a local college.
Brunswick Community College hosts a job fair every spring. This year they expect to have more students filing by the booths.
BCC just finished spring enrollment with a record 1,400 students, which is a 20% increase over last year. It also beats fall enrollment numbers when just over 1,300 students signed up for classes.
Tough times around the country also mean many technical colleges are dealing with a growing wave of students at a time when the economic slowdown is pinching schools' budgets.
Many students are seeking new skills after losing their jobs.
A spokeswoman for North Carolina's community college system says enrollment was up in the fall at 49 of the state's 58 community colleges.
She also says community college enrollment rises about three percent for every one percentage point increase in unemployment.
