WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - A teenager is behind bars again after escaping from police custody Wednesday night.

According to a detective from the Whiteville Police Department, 18-year-old Caron Antwan Robinson was still in handcuffs when he escaped around 6:00 PM.

Robinson ran through an automated door when it was closing as he was being taken into the Columbus County Jail.

Police say the door has a time delay so the teenager had at least a minute to run.

Just before 1:00 Thursday morning, Whiteville Police officers found Robinson with drugs in an abandoned house.  Robinson had managed to free himself from the handcuffs.

The teenager was first arrested a month ago after robbing several people at gunpoint.  Authorities say Robinson was always polite when he committed the crimes.

"While he had a man at gun point he would say, I'm sorry," said Sgt. Bobby Fowler with the Whiteville Police Department.  "He would say sorry. One man asked if he could give him the money and keep his wallet and he said, 'Yeah, I'm sorry for robbing you.'"

Regardless of his apologies, police knew they had to take him into custody.

Robinson is facing several charges including armed robbery, larceny property damage, and drug related charges.
