WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Battleship North Carolina is rusty and will stay that way for a little longer.
According to Executive Director of the War Memorial, Dave Scheu, the bottom of Battleship is rusting because it has been 52 years since the bottom of the ship has been worked on.
A few years ago WECT reported that the battleship would be towed to Norfolk for repairs in 2008, but 2008 came and went and the battleship stayed docked.
"Basically with the economy being where it is, we decided to push the repair out to the right," said Scheu.
Now the goal is to have the vessel repaired in about three years, according to Scheu. The repairs could take up to five months and cost nearly $8 million.
Efforts to raise money to pay for the work have been put on hold. Ultimately, battleship officials hope the funds end up in the state budget.
