WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington man is facing felony charges for targeting the Sable Helicopter with a laser beam.

The Sable crew was flying over Hinton and Park Avenues in Wilmington when a laser beam was shone into the eyes of the pilot.

Peter Letson, who was flying Sable, lowered his night vision goggles to block the beam from interfering with his vision.

Using FLIR (forward looking infrared) the pilot located 30-year-old Nicholas Lexton Wheeler, in his backyard on 5715 Park Avenue and called for ground support.

Police officers found Wheeler holding a red laser light then arrested and charged him with interference to a flight crew.

He has been released on bond.
