Brunswick County, NC (WECT) - A man in Shallotte died Tuesday night after being hit by a pickup truck.
According to troopers, 53-year-old Julus Drake Lewis was walking on Tar Landing Road just outside of Shallotte.
Troopers said the driver of the truck, Steven Stepka, 31, never saw Lewis until it was too late.
Some people living in the area said the accident comes as a shock because they don't see many pedestrians on the streets.
"I had my granddaughters with me, we thought it was a deer that had been hit," said resident Barbara Lewis. "As we got closer we saw skid marks and they were looking for something in the ditch."
State Troopers said Lewis was intoxicated, but they are still trying to determine the level of alcohol in his system at the time of the accident.
Stepka will not face any charges.
