WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - As the clock strikes midnight, folks all over will pop the tops of their champagne bottles.
December 31 is the single busiest day of the year for champagne sales, but this year, there was some fear that the economy would cause people to skip the tradition.
We've found that's not necessarily the case in New Hanover County. One Wrightsville Beach wine dealer said for his business there is reason to celebrate.
"I think we've seen steady holiday sales," said Jason Adams with Lighthouse Beer and Wine. "No one seems to have changed their habits or patterns. I think champagne drinkers are champagne drinkers. They tend to stick with their habits and they usually drink one particular brand, they stick with that and I haven't seen anybody change in that."
Nationwide the story's a little more complicated. We're told champagne sales are flat, but sparking wine sales are up.
