WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington City Council members are going to discuss new taxi fares at the beginning of 2009.
Council members recently voted to do away with the $1.00 gas surcharge they allowed taxi drivers to implement when gas was around $4.00 a gallon.
Council members said many taxi drivers are concerned they aren't making enough money to survive without the surcharge.
"We have to have cab service here. Folks who fly in or travel to Wilmington, the first contact with us are with our cab drivers," said Wilmington City Council Member Ronald Sparks. "We want our prices to be fair. We're not trying to stop people from making a living or gauge rider-ship."
City staffers are investigating cab rate across North Carolina to see if the rates in Wilmington should increase.
