COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The City of Whiteville wants to add some more sports fields to the area to make them more tournament accessible.

The city wants to build two more baseball fields and a football field, but a citywide budget freeze is making it difficult.

Now, the Parks and Recreation Department and Public Works Department are joining efforts to fix a drainage problem where the future fields would be.

City leaders say building the athletic fields are necessary in order to increase tourism in Whiteville.

"We're trying to use parks and rec to lure people into Whiteville. When we build these two fields when baseball tournaments and softball tournaments come into Whiteville people will spend their money to stay in our motels and hotels. They'll spend money at Wal-mart and they'll eat at our local restaurants," Whiteville City Manager, Joshua Ray.
