COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The City of Whiteville is taking part in a challenge to make the area more environmentally friendly.

Whiteville City leaders have planted 100 trees as part of the North Carolina League of Municipality Green Challenge.

The leaders have also started thinking of other ways to reduce their energy costs.

The goal of the challenge is to become the most environmentally friendly city.

City Manager Joshua Ray said Whiteville is trying to promote the environment while still keeping it's small town charm.

The Green Challenge is expected to take place over the next 3 to 5 years.
