PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - While most students are enjoying time away from school during the holidays, some students in Pender County are sitting at their desks.
Students at Malpass Corner Elementary are making up days they missed when a small fire kept them out of school for nearly two weeks earlier this month.
Even though they are making up the days during what would have been their holiday break, the principal of the school said they are seeing a high attendance. Monday, 75% of students were in school.
Some parents said it is important for children to get their education, even during the holidays.
"I know it's difficult for parents who have travel plans for kids to go see other family members. But she had plans to go to Virginia with her dad. But it's more important for her to be here in school," said Rhonda Blango.
Students at Malpass will finish the week with a half day on Wednesday. They will make up more days during their spring break.
