WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -- 43-year old Ronald Berry is dead after leading New Hanover County sheriff's deputies on a car chase.

Deputies say just after midnight Thursday Berry was driving toward Wilmington city limits and speeding.  When an officer tried to pull him over, he kept going.

The car chase ended at the 2200 block of Oleander Drive.  That's where deputies say the driver hit the rear end of a patrol car, lost control and crashed into a tree.

Berry died at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Traffic investigators are still trying to determine why he refused to pull over.
