WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Around this time nine years ago, a young woman was murdered while working at a local convenience store to save money for the holidays.
The mystery surrounding her death is still unsolved.
As Janice Hamilton decorated her daughter's grave, she hoped it was the last time she will spend another Christmas not knowing why 26-year-old Tera Tracy's life was cut short.
Christmas Eve morning of 1999, someone brutally beat, stabbed, and left Tera to die at the Pantry Convenience Store in Castle Hayne.
A lot has changed over the past 9 years. The Pantry where Tera worked is now a Kangaroo Express. The home that was across the street where her family was asleep the night of her murder has since been torn down and replaced with a CVS Pharmacy.
Even though the neighborhood has changed, the family still craves to learn why Tera was killed.
Detective Ken Murphy has inherited the case and says that even though so much time has passed, he believes witnesses have information that could lead to an arrest.
It was a gruesome murder that left a family wanting answers and a daughter who can never spend another Christmas with those she loved, except in their hearts.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, (910) 341-4200.
