ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An Onslow County Marine corporal has been charged with attempted murder after his wife was attacked with a hammer.

Onslow County deputies say that 24-year-old Jonathan Gould called them just after four Saturday morning to report that he was assaulted in his home.

Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said Gould stabbed himself with a small pairing knife in hopes to make law officials believe there was a third party involved in the attack.

He told authorities that a man attacked him as he tried to enter his home early Saturday morning.

Gould told deputies he was injured and left unconscious and woke up to find his wife severely injured.

Erin Gould was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with life-threatening head injuries.

A nursing supervisor said Monday morning that the hospital has no information on a person with that name, but Erin Gould's uncle John Morelli of Ohio told the Jacksonville Daily News Sunday that she was stable and responding to treatment.

After investigating the scene deputies learned that Gould's story didn't add up.  Gould admitted to deputies that he hit his wife in the head with a hammer.

Gould was charged Saturday and is being held on a $1 million bond.

He made his first court appearance in Onslow County December 22.  Gould's next court date is set for January 15.
