WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - They say that the worst of times seem to bring out the best in people.

And with all the bad news about the economy, unemployment, bailout, and recession - none of it seemed to get in the way of the generous hearts of this community.

Here's the evidence.  Right here in our building, all month long our employees have been forced to navigate around boxes filled with toys and bikes parked throughout the station.

I'm sure by now you are familiar with our Holiday Smiles Toy Drive and Weller's Wheels campaign.

Because of the economy, we tried to hold our expectations in check.  We just didn't think people would be able to give as much.   I'm happy to say we were wrong.

The final numbers are not in, but it appears you generous souls have set a new record.  Last year it was 52 thousand dollars worth of toys & bikes, and this year we're surpassing that.

To those of you who contributed - bless you.  From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for helping make this Christmas very special for thousands of children.

That's my turn.  Now it is your turn.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at
