PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - High school students in Pender County have a new place to head after the holiday break.

The board of education, county commissioners, and the media were given a first look inside the new building Friday morning.

The new Topsail High School in Hampstead is a 225,000 square foot facility.

The school will be able to hold 1,500 students, which is about 500 more than the current school has room for.

Aside from bigger classrooms, one of the new features is a 650 seat auditorium.  It is the first auditorium to be built in a Pender County school since 1938.

An open house and ribbon cutting for the public is set for January 2, 2009.  Students begin classes there January 5.
