COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The superintendent of Whiteville City Schools stepped down a month early to start his new job sooner.

Randy Shaver accepted a superintendent position in Mississippi, but was suppose to work in Whiteville until June 30.  Instead, Shaver and school board members came to an agreement that made his last day May 29.

"I've had a great time in Whiteville," said Shaver.  "I think we've done some really good things. We've made excellent changes in expectations and accountability."

The executive director of operations for Whiteville schools, Anthony Martin, has been appointed the administrator in charge during the month of June.

Thomas Hager will begin his reign as the new superintendent July 1.

Hager has 13 years of experience as a superintendent and previously work for schools on military bases at Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune.
