WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Salvation Army hopes people get into the holiday spirit early this year.
The charity organization's holiday season officially began Friday morning with the lighting of the Angel Tree at Independence Mall.
WECT's Kim Ratcliff is the official angel of 2008 and flipped the switch to kick off the event.
The Angel Tree contains the names of children in the Cape Fear area who are in need of your holiday help.
Even though times are tough, the Salvation Army hopes you have something to spare.
The organization will be accepted unwrapped gifts for people on the Angel Tree until December 14. All you have to do is pick a name off the tree.
Friday's event was also the kick-off to the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettles.
