WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The family of Peyton Strickland is suing UNCW and its police department for what they feel was a sloppy investigation that lead to the death of their son.
Strickland was shot and killed after a sheriff's deputy mistakenly opened fire during a raid on his home in December of 2006.
Sheriff deputies suspected the teenager had stolen a pair of Playstation 3's.
Strickland's family filed a lawsuit with the State Industrial Commission, blaming the university and police for a hasty and over-zealous investigation.
Campus police asked the Sheriff's Department to respond to Strickland's home after seeing online photos of some of his friends posing with guns.
The Strickland family has already received a multi-million dollar settlement from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Department.
