My Turn, Your Turn: Paper bags

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - If you are anywhere near my age you can remember going to the grocery store without getting into the paper versus plastic debate. No one bothered to ask.  You always got paper.

Well that stopped after environmentalists complained about all the trees being killed to produce the paper bags.  The solution was recyclable plastic bags.

Turns out not many people bothered to recycle the bags. Instead, the plastic goes into landfills where it will sit for thousands of years.  And that's only if people really bother to throw them away.  Many don't - and now those plastic bags are said to be the second most commonly littered item - with cigarette butts being number one.

Aren't you glad we solved that paper problem?  Me neither.

But now there's a better solution. The experts are telling us to use cloth bags. The thought is we are supposed to store these at home, or in our car, and take them to the store when we shop for groceries.  Sounds like a pretty good solution to me.  Sure hope it works better than the last one.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at
