My Turn, Your Turn: Sound stage

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - This week I attended a ground breaking that was really different.

First, it was held indoors - but that's only because we had lousy weather.  Second, it was for a sound stage.

EUE Screens Gems is constructing what they call Stage 10 - or the "Dream Stage." When completed, it will be the third largest sound stage in the world.

That's certainly good news for the company.  But it's also good news for this community.  The film industry spent nearly 100 million dollars in the Wilmington area last year.  And with this sound stage, it puts Wilmington in play for larger productions and an even larger boost to the economy.

Another thing to consider is what it does for our quality of life.  Because of the film and television industry, artistic people live here, and those same people get involved in the arts in our communities.

That means we get to enjoy a lot of really good theatre and music.  I've heard it said that Wilmington provides the more live entertainment per capita than any other city in America.  And I think it's wonderful.

So the piles of dirt that were pushed aside are not just welcoming a new building.  They are inviting a new group of talented individuals who will also put their creative stamp on this community.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn.  To comment on this segment or anything else, email me, here.
