WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - I'm enjoying almost everything about the 2008 Olympic Games. But there's one thing that's really bugging me. I'm disappointed Mark Spitz wasn't invited to the games.
For those of you not old enough to remember, Mark Spitz was the Michael Phelps of 36 years ago. It's Spitz's record Phelps broke. But nobody bothered to invite him to China. The U-S Olympic team didn't. The International Olympic Committee didn't. And even NBC dropped the ball. He would have been a great person to have sitting there next to Bob Costas.
The best thing about a new sports record is honoring a new champion - and paying tribute to the former record holder. But this time we were cheated out of half that equation. And that robbed us of an even greater Olympic moment.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave your comment below.
