Firefighter assaulted while making a weekend rescue

WILMINGTON -- Saturday afternoon, a firefighter with the Wilmington Fire Department was assaulted in the Harris Teeter grocery store parking lot located on South College Road.

According to officials with the Wilmington Police Department, the firefighter was responding to a 911 call and an alarm that had gone off inside of the grocery store.

When the firefighter arrived at the scene, a car was parked in the grocery store's fire lane.

Officials said the firefighter honked his horn and then got out of his engine to approach the parked car. The driver of the car got out of his vehicle, and punched the firefighter.

The driver quickly drove away.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the Wilmington Police Department.
