Sampson County man turns himself in

SAMPSON COUNTY -- A man accused of murder has surrendered to detectives.

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a verbal argument occurred early Tuesday morning between 28-year-old James Michael Cromartie, Jr. and 22-year-old Gabriel Ishmael Kerr.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fight escalated and Kerr was shot and killed.

Deputies found Kerr's body in the back yard with blood around his body.

Just before noon on Tuesday, Cromartie contacted the Sampson County Sheriff's office to coordinate his surrender with detectives.

Cromartie was charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm by Felon.

He is being held in the Sampson County Detention Center without bond.
