Moderate weather helps control massive wildfire

HYDE COUNTY-- Firefighters are using moderate weather conditions to their advantage.

Firefighters said a brief period of rain and cooler temperatures gave them a chance to improve the containment lines found along a wildfire burning in easter North Carolina.

Since Saturday, more than 41,000 acres have burned.

Crews are still watching the weather for any gusty winds or lightning.

The fire is about 40 percent contained.

Response to the fire has cost the state almost $2.6 million.

The fire has been burning for about two weeks.
