WILMINGTON -- Beware of a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Wilmington Fire Department.
Someone is calling Wilmington residents claiming to be with the fire department, asking for money.
According to fire officials, this isn't the first time they've heard about this type of scam.
Apparently, the caller says that they fire department is asking for contributions to educate the community and help those in need.
Fire Chief Ron Jordan said the fire department has never called residents to ask for pledges.
"If in doubt, you need to ask questions. If they are indeed representing themselves as Wilmington firefighters, then they are not doing what they need to do and they need to be reported," said Chief Jordan.
The caller also claims that the money being raised will be used to buy new smoke alarms.
