BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- Someone has paid the debt the state said Sheriff Ron Hewett owes to the county.
Tuesday, Bob McHenry, a friend of Hewett's, said he walked into the county manager's office and paid more than $1,400 in cash towards Hewett's debt.
McHenry said he did it because he thinks Hewett is innocent, and he's sure the case against the sheriff is a misunderstanding.
"He's a good man, and a good sheriff and we want him to stay," said McHenry.
County officials said they took the money as a donation, but they wouldn't comment if it would be used to pay off Hewett's debt.
