WILMINGTON -- Hewett remains suspended from his duties in Brunswick County and is accused of serious crimes.
But, he will hold onto his job for awhile, even if only in the title.
The confusion and debate about how to replace the sheriff is on hold.
Brunswick County Attorney Huey Marshall has been on the phone most of the day trying to interpret the legality of finding a replacement for Hewett before he has a chance to fight his suspension at a hearing May 5.
For now, County Coroner Greg White is the acting sheriff.
At first, Marshall wanted to start the process of finding a permanent replacement for Hewett quickly. But the county's Democratic Party leader said replacing the sheriff can't happen until after the May hearing.
Marshall said if Hewett is removed then there will be less room for controversy.
