Mecklenburg County commissioners have approved the layout of an uptown arena and park. The move clears the way for the city to lobby the NBA for a new team and begin in-depth planning on a new coliseum.

The board approved the plan 8-to-1.

The plan calls for an arena and an eight-point-five-acre park in Third Ward, about two blocks north of Ericsson Stadium.

Although the Hornets are moving to New Orleans next year, the NBA is considering bringing an expansion franchise to Charlotte. The league is unlikely to return to Charlotte without a new arena.
