BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- In 2007, Sheriff Ron Hewett and dozens of his deputies, supporters, and acquaintances were subpoenaed to testify in front of a grand jury.
In January, seven more deputies received subpoenas. If they refuse to testify, they are forced to hand over financial records.
Since the grand jury proceedings are secret, the full extent of the inquiry has not been revealed.
Those receiving subpoenas have not publicly shared their experiences with the grand jury.
The sheriff's office has already turned over financial information and personnel documents since subpoenas were first handed out.
Officials said it will take time to gather all the needed information. The investigation is ongoing about Hewett's office and his campaign finances.
