Jon Evans anchors "WECT News at 5:30", and co-anchors "WECT News at 6" & "WECT News at 11" with Frances Weller. He also co-anchors "Fox 26 News at 10" with Michelle Li on our sister station, WSFX-TV. He also does the "Ask WECT segments", and hosts the station's political debates and forums.
Jon's career in radio and television spans more than 30 years. He began working in radio at stations near his hometown of Nesquehoning, PA at the age of 15. While attending King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Jon also did play-by-play for the Monarchs' baseball and basketball games. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from King's in 1984, and began a career in television news. After stops in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Gainesville, FL and New Bern, NC, Jon's career brought him to Wilmington in 1992.
Along with the many hurricanes that have hit the Wilmington area, Jon has covered many other national stories. The Presidential Debate at Wake Forest University between Al Gore and George Bush, the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston (when then-NC Senator John Edwards was the Vice-Presidential candidate) and the devastation done by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast are just a few of his most memorable.
Along with his anchoring and reporting responsibilities, Jon has also been very active in the community. He regularly hosts or emcees charity events for local schools and civic organizations such as the Red Cross, March of Dimes, Communities in Schools, NC Azalea Festival and many others. Since losing his father to complications from diabetes in 2001, Jon has been the "Celebrity Chair" for local Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation events, which have raised more than one million dollars in the efforts to find a cure for the disease. He has served on Advisory Boards for the Cape Fear Council Boy Scouts of America, Salvation Army and Carolina Canines for Service. Most recently Jon has been the 2009 Campaign Chair for the United Way of the Cape Fear Area, raising much-needed funds to bring about change in the education, income and health of local families.
In his spare time, Jon enjoys playing golf (9 handicap), reading (favorite authors are David Baldacci, Vince Flynn & Brad Thor) and playing guitar. He is also spending a lot of time these days with his family's newest addition, a chocolate Labrador Retriever named Henry.
Jon & his wife Sheila will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 2010. They have 3 children, Jonathan, 21, Monica, 20, and Abby, 16. They have also added a beautiful, spoiled, soon to be 2-year-old, Chocolate Lab, Henry to their family.
