WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH -- A vacant motel next to Jonnie Mercer's Pier is being destroyed.
Crews began tearing down the Seascape Motel Monday.
After it's gone, the land won't sit idle for very long.
Ward Manning, the developer who owns the property, declined to discuss his plans with the media.
Town officials say the area will become 36 residential units, with 8,000 square feet dedicated to commercial space for retailers and other businesses.
Wrightsville Beach Planning Director Tony Williams says this project was a long time coming.
"This is the first mixed use permit that has been issued. We hope this will clean up this area and the town will be proud of this project," said Williams.
The exact building plans will be released this spring or early summer.
