NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- A one car collision on Friday morning killed one man and sent another man to jail.
Daniel Lee Wetherington, 27-years-old, was killed when he was ejected from the back seat during a single car collision with a pole on Market Street. Wetherington was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the vehicle, 21-year-old Kevin Sumer, has been charged with Felony Death by Vehicle and Careless & Reckless Driving. Sumer's bond was reduced and he has been released from jail.
Police say say Sumer had been drinking.
Investigators believe Sumer was trying to pass another car, panicked when he saw oncoming traffic and hit a utility pole.
Two other passengers were treated and released from the hospital for minor injuries. There is no word on their conditions.
The accident did cause traffic delays but Market Street was re-opened at about 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
Progress Energy reports that about 2,000 homes were without power because of the deadly accident, but the power has been restored.
While authorities believe this accident was largely the result of driver error, residents say the narrow roadway is dangerous and played a significant role in the deadly wreck.
