Consider This: Busy Weekend in Wilmington

We've got a busy weekend planned for you.

Friday and Saturday we're sponsoring the "Invasion of the Pirates" downtown on the Cape Fear riverfront. It's put on by WHET, the Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust, and starts at 5 p.m. on Friday when the Meka II tall ship comes up the river with cannons blazing to seize the city.

Events continue all day Saturday with a children's costume contest, a treasure hunt and a pirate boat flotilla at sunset.

Also, on Saturday, we're sponsoring, and competing in, the Cape Fear Mini Grand Prix at the CFCC North Campus on Blue Clay Road. The event starts at 10 a.m. and helps support  programs at the Duke Children's Hospital. We'll be driving the number 6 car, naturally!

Finally, on Sunday, we'll be helping you live healthier and maybe even saving lives with our Healthy Lifestyles Expo at Independence Mall.

Our exhibitors will be distributing healthy lifestyle information and answering your health questions.

The National Prostate Cancer Coalition will bring their mobile screening van so men can receive a free prostate screening procedure. More than 6,000 men in North Carolina will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. It's the second most-deadly cancer in men but, if it's detected early, nearly 100% survive. However, since prostate cancer has no symptoms in its early stages, screening is extremely important for early detection. It could very well save your life.

We hope you'll join us for these special events. There will be something for everyone.

That's what we think. Tell us what you think. kd
