RALEIGH -- The state Board of Elections says state Rep. Mary McAllister's campaign committee has paid a $16,294 penalty for improper financial transactions.
In June, the board found that McAllister received $5,669 as repayment for loans she never made to her campaign committee.
The board also found that the Cumberland County Democrat accepted $3,625 in contributions from prohibited or anonymous sources and that some of money was deposited into her personal account.
During a hearing before the Elections Board, McAllister said she did not intentionally make or accept improper payments.
The penalty included $7,000 to cover the cost of the state's investigation.
Board deputy director Kim Strach said the payment was received Friday. McAllister had until Monday to pay the fine or contest it.
