ASHEVILLE -- The Democratic Party has asked the State Board of Elections to look at whether a group of conservative Republicans in western North Carolina should register as a political committee.
The Carolina Stompers had planned a protest at this weekend's Democratic Party dinner in Asheville.
Group members took issue with the dinner because it is named in part for Gov. Charles Aycock, an advocate of white supremacy during his tenure at the turn of the century.
State Democratic Party chairman Jerry Meek asked the board to examine whether the group must disclose its donors and expenses.
Group leader Chad Nesbitt says it isn't raising money for candidates.
The Carolina Stompers canceled its protest after State Treasurer Richard Moore said this week the party should rename the event.
