CAMDEN, S.C. -- Republican White House hopeful John McCain said on Wednesday that President Bush made a mistake after the September 11th terror attacks by encouraging people to shop rather than urging citizens to join the military or volunteer.
McCain told students at a Camden military school that people would have joined the military or volunteer groups if the president had urged them to do so.
The Arizona senator made the comments after shelving a speech that was highly critical of Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton.
McCain said the version on which he passed was similar to an address he's already made and that his differences with the New York senator remain a "legitimate issue."
