Elizabeth Edwards Comments on Education Plan

BOW, N.H. -- Elizabeth Edwards says the only thing the No Child Left Behind act has accomplished is demoralized teachers.

She made the comments in New Hampshire on Saturday while explaining her husband's plan to overhaul the federal education law.

A day after John Edwards announced his $7 billion a year program for reforming primary education, his wife met with teachers and others involved in education to hear their concerns about the federal law enacted by the Bush administration in 2002.

Though Edwards voted for the law as a North Carolina senator, he said Friday it has been poorly implemented and underfunded and should be overhauled to end the focus on punishing schools that don't meet arbitrary standards.

Speaking at a middle school library, Elizabeth Edwards said she believes No Child Left Behind was an attempt by the Bush administration to pave the way for a voucher system in which public funds would be used to send children to private schools.
