Consider This: Family Safety

We've done everything we can do to prepare you, now it's up to you.

At WECT, we take weather seriously. We have the best team of meteorologists in the coastal Carolinas and they're focused on keeping you safe during severe weather.

George, Eric and Craig maintain the area's most comprehensive weather information on our website including First Alert Live Doppler and our Hurricane Center.

Each year they host our Hurricane Expo, update our Hurricane Survival Guide which, if you didn't pick one up is available to download on our website and they make hundreds of live appearances to teach about severe weather safety.

They also provide you with the First Alert Desktop for your computer to notify you about severe weather and breaking news, the WECT Weather-Plus Digital TV channel for 24/7 local and national weather information and WECTtogo for weather, news and more on your web-enabled cell phones. That allows you to check our First Alert Live Doppler from the beach, the golf course, in-shore, near-shore and anywhere else you need up-to-the-minute weather information.

They teamed up with Midland Radio and Food Lion to bring you the First Alert All Hazards Radio  to warn you about severe weather emergencies in your neighborhood. It's all part of their commitment to keep you educated, informed and safe during severe weather, but they can only do so much.

Preparation is the most important resource when it comes to the safety and security of your family.

This week marks the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. If we learned anything from that storm, it's that you can't count on the government to save you.

It's totally up to you.

The peak months of hurricane season are still to come so review your emergency plan, stock up on your survival checklist items and, if you're ever advised to evacuate, don't think about it twice.

Get your family out. Your safety, and that of your loved ones, is in your hands.

That's what we think, tell us what you think. (kd)
