Convention Center May Be a Campaign Issue

WILMINGTON -- Members of the chamber and downtown leaders are urging candidates not to turn the convention center into a campaign issue.

A press conference was held Tuesday afternoon where various supporters of the convention center project expressed why it will be a good thing for the city.

The group says that talk about the negatives of the convention center is filled with misinformation.

Members of the group say for Wilmington, the convention center works and that it will make money.

"We don't want to look at generalities of convention centers across the country, but instead look at this convention center in Wilmington, it matches up very well with other areas and it will be successful," said Jim Bryan of the Wilmington Chamber.

Officials in support of the convention center estimate that it will help create close to $50 million in tourist revenue.
