Fatal Shooting in Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY -- A domestic dispute in Columbus County ends in a deadly shooting.

The sheriff's office says a man is dead after trying to break into his girlfriend's home on Robbie's Lane in Riegelwood.

The victim, 23-year-old Devon Tyrell Brown, was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

Authorities say Brown and his girlfriend got into an argument Saturday and Brown left the house after threatening to hurt his girlfriend.

Early Sunday morning, Brown tried to break into his girlfriend's home and got into a struggle with the woman's uncle, David Simmons, who was staying with her.

The uncle then fired a gun which killed Brown.

Sheriff Chris Batten says everyone in this situation is a victim.

"Anytime a family member loses a loved one, they're all victims. We look at domestic violence very carefully and take it very seriously," Sheriff Chris Batten said.

No arrests were made and the sheriff expects District Attorney Rex Gore to officially rule it as a case of self-defense.
