Dog Fighting May Be a Problem in the Area

NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- Local officials are suspicious that dog fighting has been taking place in the area.

Officials at the New Hanover County Animal Control say several pit bulls were recently brought into the shelter. The dogs had bites and wounds that were consistent with dog fighting.

Animal activists say pit bulls are very loyal dogs which could be a bad thing if they fall into the wrong hands.

New Hanover County has had only one reported case of dog fighting in recent years, but that doesn't mean it's not happening.

"We've had several cases where we were suspicious of people. We need local help for the community to step in and be our eyes out there," Jean McNeil of New Hanover County Control said.

If you see any suspicious activity, you're asked to contact your local animal control.
