NORTH CAROLINA -- A new study shows hand sanitizers can be harmful to children.
According to NC State and A & T State University's Cooperative Extension there have been many reported incidents of children showing up in hospital emergency rooms appearing to be drunk. The problem was identified as alcohol poisoning and traced back to hand sanitizers.
Most sanitizers are alcohol-based and can be ingested if kids put their hands in their mouths.
Here are some steps to prevent kids from getting sick:
- Let the child use hand sanitizer only under adult supervision.
- Check the manufacturer's instructions for the brand being used.
- Apply only the required amount in the palm of the hand.
- Be sure the child does not lick his or her fingers.
