Council to Discuss Lifeguards at Freeman Park

CAROLINA BEACH -- The town council is considering stationing lifeguards at Freeman Park after the death of a swimmer there last month.

It took emergency responders five minutes to reach the location of the woman who was caught in a rip current. She was unconscious by the time they arrived.

While this recent event did bring greater attention to the issue, Carolina Beach City Manager Tim Owens says there's been talk of having lifeguards at Freeman Park for quite some time.

"This year there was one drowning up at Freeman Park, and the discussion of lifeguards came before that unfortunate incident. There has always been some concern about not having life guards in that area."

Council members will address the issue at their next meeting on July 10.
