Edwards Meets with Smithfield Workers

CHAPEL HILL -- Workers from Tar Heel's Smithfield plant met Thursday with presidential candidate and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards.

At his campaign headquarters in Chapel Hill, Edwards urged the workers to continue their efforts to unionize the plant.

The Tar Heel facility is the nation's largest pork processing plant employing several thousand workers.

Union organizers have had little success but Edwards says they shouldn't give up.

"The work conditions are very difficult at Smithfield. These folks behind me don't mind working. They've worked hard all their lives. They understand what hard work is. They just want to be treated with some dignity and respect, and they want to be able to voice their view in this democracy, which is what we believe in," said Edwards.
